Beijing: A City Between the Ages

【発表概要】
The lecture presents Beijing in the Republican period as a city between tradition and modernity, in which the centuries-old structures of the imperial era – the city walls, gates, palaces and temples – are still clearly recognizable, but at the same time are overshadowed by the messengers of modernity – cars, trams, banks and telegraph poles. But, perhaps more importantly, the transformation from pre-modern to modern also becomes apparent in the changing ways of living, traveling, and communicating in Beijing. It is these subtle changes that the lecture traces: they reflect not only the transformation of a city but the turning point of an entire society.
